Instead of celebrating, Escudero-Kontostathis is in the hospital with severe burns, fighting for her life, according to a GoFundMe page for her recovery.
On August 4, Escudero-Kontostathis was working outside the White House to raise money for Ukraine, when she and three others were struck by lightning, DailyMail reported.
She is the sole survivor.
Escudero-Kontostathis was put on a ventilator, but no longer needs it, and now has taken her first few steps since the strike, DailyMail said.
"She is the toughest person I know and she will continue to battle through this tough time!"..."She is in a lot of pain but making progress every day! Her short term memory is getting better as well which is great!"
Her friend updated those following Escudero-Kontostathis' recovery on the GoFundMe, and spoke optimistically about her journey ahead.
The page was started to help Escudero-Kontostathis cover medical bills and fund transportation to her upcoming Masters program at Johns Hopkins University, a friend wrote on the GoFundMe page.
Her friend said donations will also go to the logistics of moving Escudero-Kontostathis and her medical providers through her apartment building, which has no elevators.
The GoFundMe page had raised $40,418 of their $40,000 goal by August 8.
